Problems facing the university
This is a table highlighting the lost income percieved by the management over the last three years. It is in paragraph 31 of the draft white paper.
Lost Income
ELQ Funding Withdrawal
Government policy decision to cease funding students taking degree programmes when they already have a degree at the same or lower level.
£1.3m
Business QR
HEFCE decision to increase the reward to universities for income earned from research grants and contracts funded by business, at the expense of Research Council funded grants. Sussex performs very poorly in the area of business-funded activity.
£1m
USPAS
The additional cost to fund the USPAS pension deficit.
£1.9m
Failure to recruit overseas UG students
2008 UG applications currently down by 50%, equivalent to 50 down on target (and returners in subsequent years) if reflected in intakes.
£500k
QR charities support fund
The University receives grant income based on the level of research funded by charities. This is to compensate the University for the lack of overheads paid by charities. A fall in charity income subsequently reduces the QR charity grant to the University
£200k
QR RAs and PGRs
A failure to match sector growth
£500k
Research grant income - contribution
A failure to meet research grant income targets reduces the contribution made to overhead costs
£100k
HEFCE Grant Settlement (2008-2009)
After allowing for special funding, safety-netting and other activities, there is a significant shortfall in HEFCE grant income compared to the previous year, reflecting decrease in performance
