Education Not for Sale
Friday 22nd February
Minutes
1. Introductions
2. Feedback from yesterday? what was good, what could be improved
WHAT WAS GOOD
* Turnout
* Quality of speakers, should be repeated next Thursday
WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED
* The facilitator should be someone who will be less involved in the discussion
* Defensiveness on the part of the 'old hands' when new proposals were raised
* New people not encouraged to attend Friday meeting. It should be
emphasised that the process is open and all are welcome to Friday
meetings
* Unclear process after discussion
* Need to facilitate productive discussion without dictating
* Too much voting, too much formality
* Unclear agenda
* Discussion wasn't open-ended - we went straight to discussing demands
3. Next Thursday's meeting
PROPOSALS
* Put forward a concrete process from here
* Publish minutes online with names disguised
* Publish weekly update on situation
* Publish log of (University?) meetings and decisions taken on website

agenda on the screen as people arrive.
* Write a 'catch-up' briefing for website to bring new people up to speed.
* Put the recording of the meeting online.

EDIT: We agreed to meet on Wednesday at 4pm in Falmer Common Room to finalise the agenda/process/motions we will put forward to the meeting.
DISCUSSION OF JIM'S PROPOSED DEMANDS
Re point 2. There is more to say on themes.
Re point 4. There is more to say on ATs.
GENERAL POINTS
This is a struggle over the soul of the University. we need to talk
about our philosophy. What do we want in the immediate term? Do we
make "radical" demands, e.g. scrap themes altogether, or "damage
limitation" style demands?
Need for dialogue, demands not so relevant.
We should make the links between previous attacks and what is
happening now. There is desire to attack the structure - building
autonomous collectives within the university could provide a lasting
counterbalance to management.
3. Next Thursday's meeting
4. Brainstorming Demands (preliminary discussion)
NOT DISCUSSED:
5. Library Square demo
6. Pamphlet
7. Questions
8. Senate
9. Press & media
Then general discussion.
